Jasper Howard, standout cornerback on UConn football team, died after being stabbed early Sunday morning after a party on campus. Howard, 20-year-old junior from Miami, was at school-sponsored dance at the Student Union on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Fire alarm was withdrawn at 12:26 hours, according to police, and there was an argument just then from outside the building between the two groups of people, including students and non-students.
Two people were stabbed in the fight, though police have to identify the second victim.
Both Howard and another victim was transported by ambulance to Windham Community Hospital at 12:33 am Howard was later flown by Lifestar to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, where he later died. The second victim was treated and released from Windham.
"We are actively pursuing the investigation leads," said Major Ronald Blicher of the UConn Police. Blicher said police believe the incident was a random act of violence.
He said that the two stabbing victims were found in relatively close proximity to each other. "They were next to each other. They were some distance from each other," said Blicher during a press conference held Sunday afternoon at the university.
He said that the suspect was not identified, although the incident "happened in front of witnesses.
"We have no particular reason to believe that the danger to our community," said Blicher. "It was no accident

UConn police on Sunday afternoon, still a quarter-mile of Hillside Road, near Gampel Pavilion, blinded.
Earlier on Saturday, Howard ended up playing one of the better games of his UConn career. He was 11 and addresses key forced fumble in the Cardinals '38-25 victory over Louisville at Rentschler Field.
In addition, the Huskies' top cover man, 5-foot-9, 175-pound Howard was the punt return team.
University President Michael Hogan called stab tragedy for the entire university community.
"I was in the locker room after the game yesterday. It was a joyous moment," said Hogan. "To go from this game and a victory with developments at 12:30 at night is such a tragedy.
"It's such a tragedy. I can tell you how sorry we all are sad and we all, that something similar happened in the middle of our campus."
Howard Huskies plan to identify some way in the field, with his initials, or number on their helmets. Howard will be honored some way in the Burton complex in the future.
