From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing

Welcome to the first weekly lesson in our Create a Greeting Card class. Each lesson has three parts: Definitions, Instruction, Assignment. You can do these at your own pace but I suggest spending at least a day studying the definitions and instruction then use the remainder of the week to work on the assignment associated with each lesson.

Definitions
General Concepts and Software
You can skim through (but not skip over!) the definitons on desktop publishing, page layout, photo editing, and graphics. For the best learning experience, I also suggest you look at the linked bonus material with expanded definitions for Desktop Publishing, Page Layout, Graphics Software, and Clip Art.

Instruction
Software Categories
Chances are you already have a software program that you plan to use for this class. At the very least you need a page layout or creative printing program such as The Print Shop, Microsoft Publisher, or Adobe PageMaker. Look over these classifications and discover what types of software are used in desktop publishing.

Although a page layout program is best, some projects - including greeting cards - can be done in a drawing or illustration program such as CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator, or Macromedia Freehand.

What's the Best Software for Desktop Publishing?
For a more in-depth look at the different types of software used in desktop publishing, read this FAQ and the related software category profiles that include software suggestions based on user and task.

Assignment
Get Familiar with Your Software
This class is about creating a greeting card. It is not designed to teach you how to use your software although you may learn more about your software as you progress through this class. If you aren't familiar with the basic operation - such as how to open a file and how to access the help files or read the manual, you need to take some time to learn those tasks this week.

DTP Classroom
The DTP Classroom is one of the discussion forums associated with the About Desktop Publishing GuideSite. It is set up especially to handle questions and discussion about this and other classes offered at this site as well as general "learning desktop publishing" topics.

If you have questions about what software you should have or need assistance using your software during this class, this is the place to go for help.

I also encourage all class participants to drop into the DTP Classroom and offer your own expertise to others needing help.
