| | 15. Everyday Resolutions | Instead of the usual definition pages with examples, AKAs, and maybe a graphic I'm giving you a slightly more complex assignment today. Resolution is perhaps one of the most confusing but absolutely essential concepts you'll deal with when doing desktop publishing. Today I'm offering two lessons on resolution that require a little more reading than we've had in other daily definitions. Class Notes: This is not simply a word-a-day course. The lessons follow a specific order in roughly the following groupings: General concepts > Things you need > Font specifics > Image specifics > Prepress & Printing > Rules & Tutorials (bold indicates the stage in which this lesson falls - Resolution affects everything to some degree) | | | Today's Definitions | The DPI Delimma After publishing this article I was accused by one reader of simplifying the subject matter too much and perpetuating the myth that all resolution is measured in dots. Please understand, I'm using "dots" because people seem to understand dots, they can grasp the idea of dots. This article is aimed at the true beginner as well as the person who is so thoroughly confused by all the acronyms, formulas, and misinformation about resolution that they've just thrown their hands in the air and walked away in defeat. | | Resolution Inch by Inch There are five pages to this article on resolution (and it still just scratches the surface). I recommend you read the first page which defines SPI, PPI, DPI, and LPI. If you feel ready to tackle the topic in more detail, read the full article. | | Today's Trivia | Resolve to Buy a Better Scanner When evaluating a scanner, two terms you may encounter are its optical resolution and its interpolated resolution. The interpolated resolution may have the bigger number but it's not that important. Ignore it. The optical resolution is the true measure of how much information about the image the scanner can capture.Interpolation just means the scanning software "makes up pixels" to fill the spaces - something that can generally be done much better in an image-editing program such as Photoshop - if it needs to be done at all. | | | | | | Missing a lesson?
