21. On the Hunt for Color Gaps
Jacci Howard Bear
From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing

Our last lesson looked at separations. Perhaps it occurred to you that running a piece of paper through the printing press multiple times was just asking for trouble when it comes to getting things all aligned? It's sort of like running a pre-printed form through your desktop printer and hoping the text lines up in the right spot. Well, printing presses are pretty accurate but they aren't perfect. And yes, sometimes things don't line up quite right. And when you have two different colors right next to each other or overlapping, that misalignment can be obvious.

Class Notes: This is not simply a word-a-day course. The lessons follow a specific order in roughly the following groupings: General concepts > Things you need > Font specifics > Image specifics > Prepress & Printing > Rules & Tutorials (bold indicates the stage in which this lesson falls)

Today's Definition
Trapping
No, we're not talking about hunting little bunnies... unless they're the kind printed on paper.

Today's Trivia
Don't Choke on the Terminology!
There are several terms associated with trapping such as chokes, spreads, and knockouts (sounds a bit like wrestling doesn't it?). While it's good to learn these terms don't get too wrapped up in the definitions. As long as you understand what trapping is and why it's important, the specific related terminology is less critical at this point.

When Colors Touch
OK, if you just can't help yourself, you can look here for some lessons in the basics of trapping - namely the terminology, ways to compensate for gaps, and how to avoid the need for trapping.
