22. Show Me Some Proof
Jacci Howard Bear
From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing

You proofread your work right? Beyond (but including) typos and bad grammar there are dozens of ways to proof pages in desktop publishing. For the purposes of this class there are just three terms I want you to commit to memory today. Tomorrow we'll look at more terms in the largest category of proofs - the prepress proofs.

Class Notes: This is not simply a word-a-day course. The lessons follow a specific order in roughly the following groupings: General concepts > Things you need > Font specifics > Image specifics > Prepress & Printing > Rules & Tutorials (bold indicates the stage in which this lesson falls)

Today's Definitions
Proofs
Some proofs are just for you, some for your client, and some for your printer.

Prepress Proofs
Most of the proofs you'll encounter during desktop publishing fall into this broad category. Remember prepress? It's that stage where you're getting everything just right before having the final product printed. Just check out the basic definition today. Tomorrow we'll dig deeper.

Press Proofs
Chances are that as a beginner you won't be getting into too many press proofs... but you never know so you best find out what they are right now.

Today's Trivia
The Proof is in the Comp
A comp or composite is a mockup or preliminary sketch of a design and not really what is thought of as a proof. But occasionally you'll see the term comp used to mean a proof. A composite proof is really just another way of saying a proof that includes all the text, images, and colors all together and looks more or less like what the printed piece will look like.
