From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing

There are many ways to get little drops of ink onto paper. Inkjet printing is probably the most familiar and chances are good that you have an inkjet printer sitting near your computer. Closely associated with desktop printing, inkjet and several similar ink-based technologies are also used in commercial printing. Today we're going to take a look at the most widely used of these ink-based digital printing methods to see how they work and how they are best used in desktop publishing.

Class Notes: This is not simply a word-a-day course. The lessons follow a specific order in roughly the following groupings: General concepts > Things you need > Font specifics > Image specifics > Prepress & Printing > Rules & Tutorials (bold indicates the stage in which this lesson falls)

Today's Definitions
Inkjet Printing
Heat or crystals get the liquid ink on the paper.

Dye-Sublimation
High heat takes solid dyes off of film and puts it on and in the paper.

Solid Ink
Heat turns sticks of ink into liquid ink and puts it on the paper.

Thermal Wax
Heat melts the wax from ink-coated ribbons onto the paper (or better yet, transparencies).

Today's Trivia
The Ink is in the Paper, Even Before Printing
Thermal autochrome printers are aimed primarily at digital photographers so aren't used extensively in desktop publishing. But if you're interested, learn more here about this printer that uses special light-sensitive paper.
