35. STOP SHOUTING
Jacci Howard Bear
From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing

There is nothing wrong with capital letters. They are great for starting sentences, indicating proper names, and for use in some abbreviations and acronyms.

There is nothing wrong with decorative fonts and script fonts. They can create a mood that is fun, elegant, casual, playful, or scary.

The problem is that the two don't play well together. Today's lesson is all about the right and wrong way to use all caps and decorative fonts.

Class Notes: This is not simply a word-a-day course. The lessons follow a specific order in roughly the following groupings: General concepts > Things you need > Font specifics > Image specifics > Prepress & Printing > Rules & Tutorials (bold indicates the stage in which this lesson falls)

Rule #7 of Desktop Publishing
Use All Caps with the Right Fonts
Stop shouting. Online TYPING IN ALL CAPS is considered shouting and is frowned on in most cases. In print, shouting is never worse than when it is done with decorative or script typefaces. It's ugly. It's hard to read. Just don't do it, PLEASE!

Today's Trivia
Those Little Capital Letters
Small caps, mentioned in today's lesson, are smaller versions of capital letters. Small caps are often used in place of fullsize capitals for abbreviations and acronyms within regular text because they look nicer, less obtrusive. However, the rules governing the use of small caps have changed for those who use The Chicago Manual of Style. Learn more about it
