42. Bring Out the Designer in You
Jacci Howard Bear
From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing

Before you even open up your software program you need to have an idea of what it is you are going to create. Sometimes you know exactly what you want. Other times, it takes some brainstorming and fiddling around with different ideas and concepts. You don't have to be a graphic designer to do desktop publishing. But there is still a certain amount of brainstorming and planning involved, even if you're using a template or working from someone else's design ideas.

Today's Lesson
Design Phase of Desktop Publishing
There are many lessons and topics covered in this phase. As an introduction, please read the lessons titled "What are you going to design?" and "Thumbnail Sketches" and simply look over the various other tasks listed here to get an idea of what is involved at this stage of the process.

Making Connections
Graphic Design, Elements & Principles of Design
We talked about what Graphic Design is and about the elements and principles of design back near the beginning of the course. This is the stage of the desktop publishing process where those concepts come into play.
