10. Back to Business Planning
Jacci Howard Bear
From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing

This is the end of our Start a Desktop Publishing Business Email Course. In this lesson we pull together everything covered in previous lessons and put together a roadmap, a business plan for your new small business.

Only you can decide if and when you are ready to start your business but I hope that you have a better understanding of what it takes to start and run a freelance business. If you've done the assignments you should now have some useful tools such as a business plan, a customer profile form, an hourly rate, and a contract.

Lesson
Developing a 4-Part Business Plan for Freelance Design
A business plan, even if never used to raise capital or acquire investors, can help to get your desktop publishing business off to a good start and guide it on its path to profitability. In this lesson we'll pull together assignments and notes from our past lessons and show how that information fits into four parts of a business plan.

Your Assignment
Pull Together YOUR Business Plan
Write up a business plan that incorporates (as a minimum) Description, Products & Services, Marketing & Sales, and Financial Projections for your freelance design business. Identify those areas that still need work. Don't file away your business plan never to be seen again. It's not a static document. For instance, you'll add actual profit & loss statements and balance sheets to your financial information as you start getting customers and bringing in income. Revisit it daily or weekly while starting up your business then again on a regular basis once your business is underway.
