Here's a typical conversation I hear
often.

PERSON: "What's the best way to market
to my audience?"

ME: "Well, email is awesome but you
simply can't beat direct mail."

PERSON: "Yeah, well...direct mail
doesn't work for me."

ME: "Really?"

PERSON: "Yeah, I've tried sending
letters and postcards to my list but it
didn't work."

ME: "Hmmm, can I see one of the letters
you sent out?"

PERSON: "Sure, here's one."

ME: "Well, I can see why it didn't work.
This letter screams JUNK MAIL."

PERSON: "Huh?"

And so the conversation went.

You see, ALL marketing methods work.
It's how you execute them that makes all
the difference.

The "Real" Secret to Direct Mail

So what's the answer to making direct
mail work 90% of the time?

Two things...

1. The "right" list

and...

2. The "right" offer

I've done a LOT of direct mail and I can
tell you that it's very hard to have an
unsuccessful mailing when you send the
right offer to the right list.

A True Story...

When I first started out in internet
marketing I created a product called
"Make Straight A's in School."

It was targeted toward high school and
college kids who wanted to improve their
grades.

I bought advertising, sent mailers, and
did all kinds of marketing to high
school and college kis with ZERO
results.

NO SALES, NADA, ZILCH.

Eventually I figured out that they
weren't my right target market for that
product.

So I retooled my salesletter and all my
marketing and advertising to target
PARENTS of high school and college kids.

BOOM BADA BANG!

Sales started flooding in.

Lesson Learned: You have to target your
products and services to the "right"
list of people or your best offer will
get you no where.

What Is the "Right" Offer?

The right offer is an offer that...

1. Is so irresistible that you would be
willing to borrow money from your
grandmother in order to take advantage
of it.

2. Hits your target market's emotional
hot spot and pulls out the desires in
people.

3. Is such a great deal that no sane
person would ever pass it up.

4. Is so juicy that after you finished
buying yourself, you go and tell
everyone else about the offer.

THAT'S the right offer!

CASE STUDY #1:

I'll never forget, before the dot com
bubble burst, there was a company that
offered one share of their stock to
anyone that would sign up for a free
account of their service.

In one week they got several HUNDRED
THOUSAND people to sign up.

The offer spread across the internet by
word-of-mouth like wildfire!

That was the right offer.

CASE STUDY #2:

I also remember in 2003, when the movie,
"the Passion of Christ" was produced.

Mel Gibson offered a free pre-screening
to religious leaders across the world.

They flocked to see this movie. It
generated so much buzz that people
flooded the theatres to see the movie.

It became the highest grossing revenue
non-English movie of all time.

That was the right offer.
