| | June 2011 Collector News |
What's Happening Last week I was sitting in the back yard watching a couple squirrels fighting and the struggle, for whatever reason, reminded me of John Wayne. Maybe because every one of his movies was about some kind of struggle whether he was protecting a friend, family member or fighting the cancer that eventually ended his life in June of 1979. I still recall the day I first found out while serving in the Navy. . So here I was starting an attempt at a deserving tribute to the Duke and all that he meant to a very loyal fan base of millions. And, why even today more than 30 years after his passing he has the ability to capture the attention of a new generation like my four year old daughter. While, at the same time continue to build an even stronger following and admiration from people of my own generation. Maybe that explains why I feel so privileged to be a collector and can hold in my hands extraordinary pieces of history like a genuine signed photo, his historical original signed divorce contract or one of his incredible original movie posters from his greatest films like "Searchers", "Alamo" or "Angel and the Badman". As Independence Days nears in a couple weeks you can't help but remember remarkable American patriots. And John Wayne always seems to be included at the top of that list. You can be sure this year he won't be forgotten, maybe AMC will do another (as they did in 2010) July 4th "John Wayne all weekend" tribute.... Meanwhile, while researching for this composition I came across a tribute to John Wayne written by a close friend of his by the name of Ronald Reagan. And, I thus realized I couldn't have said it better no matter how hard I tried. Here is that piece that appeared in Readers Digest in 1979: P.S.
