Auction of a Lifetime! Hollywood History

 April 2011
Collector News

    What Happening

You may or may not know that film legend Debbie
Reynolds spent over 50 years trying to preserve
Hollywood history by acquiring some of the most
priceless Hollywood relics in existence.  Some examples
include Judy Garland's "Ruby Slippers' in the Wizard of OZ
and several costumes worn by Marilyn Monroe,
Elizabeth Taylor and other major movie stars.   Ms
Reynolds had a dream to build a museum but
unfortunately that dream never materialized.  But, the
good news is the public will have the opportunity to own
some of these museum quality gems.   The prices will be
way out of my league but I still like to look (and drool) at
this incredible display of Hollywood History. .

         TODAY'S ARTICLE:

"Top 7 Ways to Stay In Touch"

______________________________________

Business networking is a contact sport,
which means that meeting a person is
only the first step.

Staying in touch and developing a
relationships with a person you've met,
is what networking is really all about.

So here are my top 7 methods for staying
in touch with people.

__________________________

1. Send Greeting Cards
__________________________

When people receive heartfelt greeting
cards, they feel warm and appreciated.

Why not pick out 4 or 5 holidays
throughout the year and send greeting
cards celebrating those holidays to your
network of friends.

I use this service to send all my cards.
It's fabulous!

http://www.ILoveToSendOutCards.com

__________________________

2. Call a Referral Source.
__________________________

One of the best and easiest ways to stay
in touch with someone is to simply pick
up the phone and say hello.

If you don't have any agenda other than
to say hello, your friends will
appreciate you even more. Just make sure
you keep it very short.

_______________________

3. Send an Article
_______________________

When you scan the headlines or the local
business journal, think about who you
know that would benefit from reading the
articles you're looking at.

Then just copy the link and email it to
them with a quick not to let them know
that you're thinking about them.

__________________

4. Send a Gift.
__________________

When was the last time someone sent you
a gift just because? Probably never!

That's what makes this technique so
unique. People don't do it.

Your friend will be shocked, surprised
and delighted that you spent the money
and took the time to send her something.

Again, the system I use to send
heartfelt gifts and cards with the push
of a button is...

http://www.ILoveToSendOutCards.com

_______________________

5. Invite to Lunch.
_______________________

I can't think of a better way to deepen
a relationship with someone than to have
a lunch and get to know them better.

In fact, you should be having a least
two lunches a week with prospective
referral sources.

Pick up the phone or email your friend
and invite to lunch!

_________________________________

6. Invite to Networking Meeting.
_________________________________

If you know your friend attends
networking meetings, why not invite him
to your next one.

Most people like to go with someone to a
networking meeting so that at least know
someone there. It makes them feel more
comfortable.

So before you run off your next
networking meeting, make a few calls in
advance and invite someone to go with
you.

__________________________

7. Invite to Activity
__________________________

Inviting business associates to attend
professional sports games, car or
boating events, BBQ's, shooting range or
even the theatre.

These are all wonderful opportunities to
bond with potential referral sources and
people that you've met through
networking meetings.

A Specific Method for Closing Big Consulting Deals

TODAY'S ARTICLE:

"How to Close Big Consulting Deals"
________________________________________

As many of you know, I was a consultant
for a Big Five (it was Big Five at the
time) consulting firm in my former life.

I've sold huge projects to Fortune 500
companies.

It was easy.

Today I want to not only explain to you
how I did it, but I'll give you a sample
dialogue I would use to get C-level
people to say "Yes!" to my proposals.

________________________________________

Here's the Secret to Closing Big Deals
________________________________________

The secret to closing big deals is NOT
about what benefits you have to offer
and it's not about how good you are.

It's all about getting your propsect to
realize that they have a BIG, HAIRY,
UGLY, NASTY PROBLEM!

They need to feel the pain and they need
to feel it financially (i.e. in dollars
and cents).

So the secret to closing big deals is to
get your prospect to say, "Yes, I have a
very bad problem and it's costing me a
lot of money and I really need to solve
it quickly."

When you can get your prospect to
confess his problems, you're 80% of the
way to closing the deal.

______________________________________

The Second Big Closing Secret Is To...
______________________________________

...is to sell the money.

By that I mean, you need to help your
prospect understand how much he's losing
every day not working with you and then
sell that to him as money he's leaving
on the table that he can have for free.

You can do that by comparing how much it
costs to solve the problem by working
with you to the amount he's losing.

The first step though is to get your
prospect to agree that he has a bad
problem.

Here's a conversation that accomplishes
both of the secrets I've revealed to
you.

_________________________________

A Sample Sales Conversation...
_________________________________

CONSULTANT (YOU): So I understand you're
having problems with employee
productivity. Is that right?

PROSPECT: Yes.

CONSULTANT (YOU): At what capacity do
you think they are working at right now?
In other words, do you think they are at
only 70% capacity?

PROSPECT: I would say that my gut tells
me they are working at about a 75%
capacity. I think we can do a lot
better.

CONSULTANT (YOU): If things were rolling
like you want them to, at what capacity
do you think you would envision your
employees working at?

PROSPECT: Hmmm, probably, at least 90%.

CONSULTANT (YOU): Okay, so you're
looking for at least a 15% increase in
productivity and you think that's
achieveable.

PROSPECT: Yes.

CONSULTANT (YOU): How many employees do
you have?

PROSPECT: We have 135 employees.

CONSULTANT (YOU): Okay, what would say
is the average salary of your 135
employees?

PROSPECT: It's around $45,000 a year.

CONSULTANT (YOU): So let's do some math.
If you have 135 employees making an
average of $45,000 a year, that's about
a $6 million dollar payroll. Right?

PROSPECT: Yes.

CONSULTANT (YOU): Okay, if your 135
employees are running at 75% and you
believe they could be running at 90%
with some help, then right now you have
around a $900,000 problem. Right?

(15% x $6 Million = $900K)

I mean, right now, you're probably
losing out on around $900,000 in salary
that you're paying out because your
employees aren't as productive as you
think they could be.

And that figure doesn't take into
account the increase in revenues you're
missing out on because of the lack of
productivity.

So really, you have a minimum $900,000
problem, would you agree.

PROSPECT: Yes, you're probably right.

CONSULTANT (YOU): Mr. Prospect, if I
could show you a way to get your
workforce working at 90% within the next
3 months, and save you upwards of
$900,000 a year, would that be worth at
least $25,000 to you?

PROSPECT: Of course.

CONSULTANT (YOU): Okay, let me explain
how I'm going to help you get there...

__________________________________

Takeaways From this Conversation
__________________________________

You'll notice that the first thing I did
was get my prospect to agree that he had
a problem.

The next step was to try to quantify
that problem and put it into DOLLARS.

Very important!

Once I did that, it's easy to sell your
solution because now you're selling the
ability to collect money for free.

Who wouldn't want that?

Tour the studios of three top illustrators

If you have never visited an illustrator's studio, you should try finagling your way into a few. Many illustrators (and designers) surround themselves with interesting art, props from projects, and collections of objects.

For example, when Bill Nelson lived nearby he always had a fascinating collection of posters, sculptures, and illustrations in progress displayed in a way that reflected his style. (Imaging kicking around his basement and coming across one of these guys.)

Here are a few examples that I recently came across on Drawger.com.

I like TV spots that are proactive

Do these spots grab your attention? Yes. Do they show off the product? Certainly. Do they position the client, Sherwin-Williams as forward thinking and tech-smart? Yup. Don't know what more you could ask. McKinney and Buck did a terrific job.

Historically accurate typography

Three Islands Press specializes in crafting historically accurate handwriting and typography in digital form.

For example, the Emily Austin font is patterned after the handwriting of Emily Austin (Bryan) Perry, an early colonist of Texas. As designer Brian Willson explains it, "In her travels, she wrote many letters home - letters that show a distinctively compact, legible hand. The challenge for me in designing the face: resisting the temptation to read and re-read her bossy directives and urgent appeals, all packed tightly together on a page."

I'm just guessing, but 3IP Type Foundry (formerly The Type Quarry) seems that it might be one of those companies that sees money as enabling the work versus money being the only focus. Nothing wrong with making money, but in most cases, passion produces a superior product.

How to select a typeface

One of the panel discussion at the recent South by Southwest (SXSW, Inc.) Interactive Festival featured four typography experts discussing typeface selection. (SXSW is a set of film, interactive, and music festivals and conferences, the interactive component of which is attended by many in the design community.)

Generally my feeling is, when it comes to typography, that there are very few truths but many religions. But this is session is worth listening to. I especially appreciated Jason Santa Maria's insights.

Here's a breakdown of the recording:

Quora: A continually improving collection of questions and answers

The burning desire of the search engine heart is to understand "intent". It wants to understand what the user is really after.

Enter Quora. As they explain it, "Quora is a continually improving collection of questions and answers created, edited, and organized by everyone who uses it. The most important thing is to have each question page become the best possible resource for someone who wants to know about the question."

"Anyone can add questions and answers to Quora. They can also categorize questions by adding topics to them, summarize answers on a question page, and edit any question or summary. Duplicate questions and topics are unified so that the content on the site keeps getting better instead of getting fragmented. Users can follow questions, topics and people, which creates a stream of relevant questions and answers for each user. The site is closely monitored and maintained by its users so the quality of questions and answers stays high."

I've only been using Quora for a short time so I can't vouch for the quality of the information, but what I've seen is promising. I have used it enough to know that if you're interested in staying abreast of fast-moving technology, Quara should be on your radar.

Want to see it work? Sign in and ask, "What is Facebook's architecture?" You'll see the many options for discovering answers and leads to other related topics.

    "The #1 Business Networking
       Secret of All Time"

There's an old saying by one of the most
famous motivational speakers of all
time, Zig Ziglar.

He said, "You can have anything you want
in this world as long as you help others
get what they want."

That's a profound statement.

By the way, here's a photo of me and Zig
Ziglar taken a few years ago...

The Law Of Reciprocity
_______________________

Zig Ziglars famous quote about helping
others is really all about the "Law of
Reciprocity."

In his book, "Influence", Robert
Cialdini introduced the concept of the
law of reciprocity, which states that
when you do something good for someone
else, they will feel compelled to return
the favor and do something good for you.

This concept is not new, It's been
around many years. In fact, you can find
the same teachings in the Bible.

Luke 6:38 - "Give, and it shall be given
unto you; good measure, pressed down,
and shaken together, and running over."

So the key to getting all you want is to
help people get what they want.

___________________________

The "Go Giver" Principle
___________________________

My friend, Bob Burg wrote a book called,
the Go Giver that reinforces this
concept.

He plays off the fact that our society
admires and heralds "go getters" (i.e.
people that assertively go out and get
what they want).

Bob, mentions that the true way to "get
ahead" in your business is to become a
"go giver" instead of a go getter. Bob
says that most go getters are "takers"
and not always givers.

But when you're constantly taking from
people (i.e. asking for favors,
contacting you only when they want
something etc.) you might get what you
want in the short run, but not in the
long run.

It's those who put other's needs and
wants before their own who become
"trusted advisors", valued friends, and
people who are admires and referred.

Have You Ever Heard "Giver's Gain!"
______________________________________

You probably have if you've ever
attended a BNI (Business Network Intl.)
meeting. BNI is the largest organized
networking group system in the world.

It's designed to help small business
owners generate referrals.

Ivan Misner, the founder of BNI coined
the term, "givers gain" as a way of
saying that if you enter a relationship
with the attitude of giving, rather than
receiving, you'll always get what you're
looking for and more.

_____________

So What?!
_____________

So you might be saying to yourself, "so
what!"

The reason I'm writing about this
important concept and why so many
thought leaders have come up with
different ways to introduce this same
teaching is because it is the #1
BUSINESS NETWORKING SECRET OF ALL TIME!

Whenever you...

1. Attend a networking meeting
2. Meet a new person
3. Are introduced to a business contact
4. Are given a referral
5. Obtain a new prospect

...you need to apply this concept. You
should ask yourself (or the person),
"How can I help this person get what
they really want?"

When you do, you'll start seeing massive
success.

Always think "THEIR WANTS" versus "MY
NEEDS."

When you satisfy their wants, your needs
will eventually be met.

"The Untold Secret to Getting Web Traffic"

____________________________________

All the internet marketing gurus will
tell you that "TRAFFIC IS KING!"

It's hard to step into any internet
marketing circles where you don't see
someone selling a course about how to
get web traffic.

Traffic!

Traffic!

Traffic!

That's all you hear about.

It seems like there is no end to the
insatiable demand to know how to get
more website traffic.

I'm here to debunk that myth right now!

I will firmly and resolutely tell you
that TRAFFIC IS NOT, I REPEAT, NOT,
KING!

____________________________

Now Don't Get Me Wrong...
____________________________

Traffic is extremely important. In fact,
it's the lifeblood of your online
business.

BUT...

Any one of you could go out and get all
the traffic you can handle TODAY if you
wanted to.

There is no end to the amount of high
quality, super targeted traffic that you
can get TODAY.

If you were to just attend one ad:tech
conference, you would know that there
are billions of online visitors just
waiting to visit your website, and you
can get them with a simple signature.

By the way, ad:tech is the conference
where all the huge web traffic deals are
made.

So if web traffic is not the king...

What Is The King of the Internet?
___________________________________

Okay, let me tell you.

But it's not what you think so just hear
me out (because I'm right about this).

The king of the internet is...

A HIGH CONVERTING SALES FUNNEL!

That's right.

If you have a high converting sales
funnel, traffic will coming running to
your door!

If you have a sales funnel that
converts, all you need to do is open it
up to affiliates and they will coming
running to put traffic down your funnel.

Think about this for a moment...

With a high converting sales funnel that
has either a continuity program or
larger back end products that you offer,
your lifetime value of a customer will
be high enough that you'll be able to go
out and buy all the targeted traffic you
want.

So, you're probably asking...

___________________________

What Is a Sales Funnel?
___________________________

A sales funnel is simply a series of
targeted offers.

For instance, imagine you were very
interested in marketing and you saw an
advertisement online for a marketing
ebook.

That would be the front end of a sales
funnel.

So the sales funnel might look something
like this...

Offer #1 - a free marketing ebook.

Offer #2 - a $19 mp3 marketing audio
program

Offer #3 - a $97 series of marketing
mp3's.

Offer #4 - a $697 offer for a marketing
home study cours

Offer #5 - an offer to become a member
of a membership website that costs $20 a
month.

Here's the kicker...

Now imagine if a person who is
interested in marketing went through
this sales funnel and purchased an
average of $197 in products.

How much would you be willing to pay for
a lead?

Right! $197  (assuming you had no costs)

The good news is that the average cost
per lead in this market is around $10 or
so.

Now how much traffic can you buy if your
cost per lead is $10, but you're average
sales per lead is $197?

The answer -> A LOT of traffic!

But it all comes down to one simple
thing, having a high converting sales
funnel.

Do you have a sales funnel?
_____________________________

EVERY business should have a sales
funnel.

Every business should have some type of
front end offer and some type of ongoing
communication method.

If you don't, you should start one right
now.

I don't care if you're in network
marketing, an insurance agent, or you
sell shoes.

You should be frequently communicating
with the people that know you and making
offers to them.

When you make offers to people for
products and services that you know will
help them, you are helping them to
improve their lives.
